I saw Alanis Morissette at JazzFest 2019. She was seven months pregnant and was singing her jagged little pill album. And it was great, because it was Alanis fucking Morissette. But it was missing something. This was the ‘been to hell and back’ and came out on the other side with scars and a limp. This 48-year-old Alanis, could sing the words, but she couldn’t channel the rage of the young woman who wrote jagged little pill. Why not? My guess is she walked through it. And she felt every part of it. And she healed, and yes, there is still a scar but not a sting. Only love.
I recently stumbled across her 2020 album such pretty forks in the road, and it was written by the same person only a reborn version. And then a friend introduced me to her 2022 album release, a meditation album called the storm before the calm. The calm does come for those who do the hard work during the storm. And sometimes that means just holding on for dear life.
I’m not really taken by famous people ever since I was 9 years old and I mustered up the courage to walk up to the best kicker in the NFL and New Orleans Saints kicker, Morten Anderson in the local Pizza Hut to ask for his autograph and he said, “can’t you see that I’m eating?” So, I’m not taken by fame, however I am taken by story.
So, If I could meet one person, I’d want to meet Alanis and have coffee on my porch with her. I could be way off, but I’d still like to know her journey.
So, if anyone has any connections, especially my Canadian friends…
